What a Future Leader receives

Help is a specific thing on a specific day.

  • A ride to practice when there is no ride.
  • A tutor before the exam that decides a scholarship.
  • Meals in the weeks a family is stretched.
  • Equipment that fits.
  • A therapist when one is needed.
  • An internship the summer before senior year.
  • A campus visit four hours away.
  • An introduction to someone who can open a door.

And a mentor who is still there when they are thirty.

Why we exist

Every year, extraordinary young people fall through cracks that should not exist.

  • Schools educate
  • Coaches develop athletes
  • Colleges recruit
  • Employers hire
  • Nonprofits run programs

Yet no institution is responsible for walking beside a young person for life. Talent is universal. Opportunity is not. The world has organizations that educate, coach, mentor, recruit, employ and support. Very few connect every stage into a single system. The Coach Wren Institute exists to build that lifelong system.

We remove chance from opportunity.

Because no young person's future should depend on who they happen to meet.

We begin with young people of extraordinary potential and limited access. We remove the barriers of circumstance, relationship, and resource. We surround them with mentors and professionals who open doors, and we stay long enough that they return to open doors for others.

Coach Maurice Wren believed coaching was a lifelong responsibility. His players kept calling him for decades because he never stopped being their coach. His life is the model this Institute was built to scale.

How it works

Our commitment lasts a lifetime.

Every Future Leader enters one lifelong network of coaches, mentors, educators, healthcare professionals, business leaders, employers, and alumni committed to opening doors throughout life.

Within that network, accomplished leaders in athletics, business, healthcare, education, and public service personally invest in every Future Leader, building lasting relationships that develop the leadership, communication, financial literacy, resilience, accountability, character, and commitment to service needed to thrive in college, career, and life.

We fund the promise before we make it

Before we admit a Future Leader, the Institute first secures the resources necessary to honour that commitment through high school. We never make a promise we are not prepared to keep. That means we sometimes decline to admit a young person we could serve, in a year when we have the will but not the funded capacity. It is the hardest discipline we practise, and it is the reason we will still be here in thirty years.

Every young person deserves someone who believes in them, and no one's potential should be limited by circumstance. The Coach Wren Institute exists to change that. How far it reaches now depends on the people who choose to stand with it.

Help Build the Future.
